I react differently to dicks than most people do.
When I encounter someone being rude, cruel, or hostile, my first reaction isn’t anger or hurt, it’s disbelief. I assume I must have misunderstood them, and offer them repeated chances to back away from their dickishness. If they don’t back away, eventually they’re forced to admit their dicky intentions openly, at which point I react with surprise. Why would someone knowingly, intentionally be a dick? What’s their motivation for choosing pointless, destructive behavior? What is going on here?
I’m not actually this innocent. It’s not that I don’t know they’re being dicks, it’s that I want to force them to spell it out for me. This highlights the absurdity of being a dick, and hopefully embarrasses the dick into being less of one.
I would like to live in a world where people being purposely malicious is the least likely explanation for any conflict. I would like to build that world, one embarrassed dick at a time.
